TO THE MIGHTY PEN PROJECT, THE STUDENTS, AND DAVE ROBBINS…

http://www.vawarmemorial.org/vawm/View.aspx?page=programsresources/mightypen

To Step away from the idiots in Washington for awhile, I thought I would write to you about a Program I became involved with not long ago, it is called the MIGHTY PEN PROJECT. It was created by DAVE ROBBINS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_L._Robbins_(Virginia_writer), a good friend and writer here in Richmond. Dave had been telling me about this fantastic program and the people that were involved for awhile before I really began to listen, but when I did it was truly fascinating. The Mighty Pen Project takes 12-15 veterans of all wars and conflicts and through Dave’s excellent and obsessed tutelage teaches them, allows them, helps them write. They can write about anything they want, but if you know Dave you know he keeps them focused and on point. It is a beautiful thing. Last night, my wife and I attended the graduation of Class 5 of the Mighty Pen Project at the Virginia War Memorial where the classes are taught. There were introductions in the beginning, readings from a number of student’s works, and then food served and much more conversation. I can say without any doubt or reservation that the students love, enjoy, and are helped through difficult and trying times and experiences by the classes and the writing. Each reading, by a student, was heartfelt and as real as it gets. Dave even read a shortened version of a student who had passed away before the class was completed. The Mighty Pen Project is a program that, of many wasted ventures I have seen and read about, is the opposite. This program is heading, and is focused in a positive direction for veterans, and I hope it continues for a long time. Godspeed to everyone involved.

IF YOU ARE A VETERAN AND INTERESTED IN WRITING, PLEASE GO TO THE WEBSITE ABOVE AND READ UP ON THE MIGHTY PEN PROJECT. CLASSES FILL QUICKLY, BUT STUDENTS ARE TAKEN ON FOR MANY DIFFERENT REASONS. GREAT JOB DAVE AND EVERYONE INVOLVED.
